Auckland Day – this was created in 1842 to celebrate the arrival of William Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand, in the Bay of Islands in 1840.
Not a lot of people know that – other than those from New Zealand.
From an historical perspective it is interesting to note that the first Auckland Day was a Saturday, on which occasion all Public Offices would be closed. No such thing as a five day week then!
